What is the HSPT test?

The HSPT test is a 298-question multiple-choice exam from Scholastic Testing Service (STS) that high schools use for 9th grade placement and scholarships. The whole test takes about 2.5 to 3 hours with breaks, and each section runs between 18 and 45 minutes.

Villa Victoria Academy gives the five main sections only, with no science or religion test.

Five sections on the HSPT test

Section Questions What it tests
Verbal Skills 60 Word meanings, analogies and logic
Quantitative Skills 52 Number series and quantity comparisons
Reading 62 Main ideas, details and vocabulary
Mathematics 64 Numbers, geometry and algebra problems
Language 60 Punctuation, spelling, grammar and usage
Total 298 All five sections

Optional HSPT prep course at Villa Victoria Academy

Villa Victoria Academy runs an optional evening HSPT prep course this fall, separate from the Saturday HSPT exam. Mr. Mario Pierpaoli, a Villa teacher and SAT tutor, teaches the class.

The class is open to all 8th graders, boys and girls. It covers the test format, test-taking strategies, content skills and time management. Villa plans to offer both options again next fall: the four-class course in October and the two-hour review in November.

Villa HSPT prep class schedule (optional evening review)

Optional HSPT prep class Class date Time Cost and sign-up
Two-hour prep session Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2026 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. $40, cash or check, paid that night. Tuesday, Nov. 10 HSPT prep class form

HSPT practice tests and free sample options

Scholastic Testing Service shares its sample test with high schools rather than families, so most students practice with published prep books or online HSPT practice tests. For practice at home, Villa recommends RedwoodPrep’s free HSPT assessment exam, a full-length practice test with an answer key that explains every question, plus free practice for the Language section.

Finding a free HSPT practice test or HSPT practice test PDF

A good free HSPT practice test or HSPT practice test PDF matches the real exam: five multiple-choice sections and 298 questions. She should take it on paper with a timer and no calculator.

For a month-by-month study plan, read our guide to HSPT test prep. Families can also review STS parent prep resources.

Seventh grade HSPT practice test at Villa (May 15, 2027)

Villa Victoria Academy holds a 7th grade practice HSPT on Saturday, May 15, 2027, for $40, and registration opens March 1, 2027. It’s the 7th grade version of the HSPT from Scholastic Testing Service, often called the Pre-HSPT.

How HSPT scores work at Villa Victoria Academy

HSPT scores start with the number of questions your daughter answers right, and there is no penalty for a wrong guess. STS turns that raw count into standard scores from 200 to 800 and national percentiles from 1 to 99, with 50 as average.

Villa Victoria Academy uses the results for 9th grade course placement and as part of its scholarship review. The test is tied to several of Villa’s scholarships, but not all of them.

The HSPT is one part of the application. Every student applying to Villa also has an interview, and so do her parents.

HSPT and scholarship deadlines for Fall 2027

Villa Victoria Academy’s scholarship deadline for 9th grade applicants entering in Fall 2027 is Dec. 4, 2026.

Note these dates:

  • Dec. 4, 2026: Take the HSPT and apply for admission to be considered for a scholarship.
  • Jan. 29, 2027: Scholarship recipients are notified.
  • May 1, 2027: Regular applications are due ($50 fee).
